Special treatment of illustrations in book design [Buke printing]
In layout design, some illustrations are often difficult to solve using ordinary layout methods, which requires special methods to be used. Here are several common situations and processing methods encountered.
1. Super core illustrations
Also known as a super version mouth chart. Super core map refers to a map with edges that exceed the core width but are smaller than the finished product size. When the drawing size is too large to be reduced to within the center size, the drawing size can be slightly larger than the center size, which is called a super center illustration. There should be a blank space of no less than 5mm between the edge of the illustration board and the edge of the finished book or magazine. There are situations where one side exceeds, two sides exceed, three sides exceed, and four sides exceed in the super version. When the four sides exceed the publishing center, if the position of the book eyebrows and page numbers is occupied, the book eyebrows can be omitted from the edition. When the page numbers of the edition are occupied, the page numbers are coded in secret.
When cutting the finished product, the standard is not to cut off the illustration in the super version heart diagram. Therefore, in order to ensure the integrity of the drawing, the distance between the edge of the drawing and the incision should not be less than 5mm.
There are two situations when using a super center image: one is intentionally designed to beautify the layout, and the other is due to the large size of the image and the need to use the super center method to solve the problem. Intentionally designed heart maps are often placed in the upper or lower corner of one side of the incision.
2. Processing methods for larger illustration plates
When the illustration format is large and using a super centered image cannot solve the problem, the following methods can also be used
① Lying down method. Refer to the normal layout of the image and then rotate it counterclockwise by 90 degrees to arrange it into the layout. When lying down, if the area occupied by the title and caption is within 2/3 of the board width, the normal layout method should be used to string text next to the picture. If the image title and caption cannot be arranged in this version after lying down, they can be arranged in the next version (which must be a single code version).
② Cross version method. Divide the image into two parts and arrange them across two versions, but they should be aligned.
③ Image annotation conversion method. If the image itself can be arranged on a single page (usually a double code version) and there is no position for the image title or caption under the page, the image title and caption of the image can be arranged at the bottom of the next single code version, and a thin line of the same length can be arranged above the image title to separate it from the main text of the page.
④ Inlaid layout in the picture. When there is no position next to or below the image, but there is a blank space in a certain area of the image, the title and caption can also be placed in the blank space inside the image.
⑤ Folding illustration. When the size of the drawing is too large to be reduced to within the center size, folding illustrations can be used. The so-called folding illustration refers to the process of printing the image separately and folding it into a size smaller than the finished product, leaving a binding section on one side. The relative position of the book when binding. For the convenience of binding, it is usually done before and after a printed page. Folding illustrations can be divided into several types according to their folding direction, such as horizontal one fold, horizontal two fold, vertical one fold, vertical two fold, cross two fold, etc. When designing folding illustrations, the convenience of binding should also be considered. If one fold is possible, do not use two or three folds. Folding illustrations require some tedious processes during binding processing, and are difficult to produce mechanically, resulting in increased production costs. Therefore, folding illustrations should be avoided as much as possible.
