在紙張的抄造過程中,與造紙機運行方向一致的方向為紙張的縱向,與紙機運行方向垂直的方向為紙張的橫向,在紙張的縱橫兩個方向上紙張纖維排列有顯著差別。這是因為在紙機運轉時的牽引力的作用下,纖維大多數按縱向排列。因此紙張在縱向和橫向上的性能是有差異的,這就是通常所說的紙張的方向性。

印刷紙張的紙紋方向的考慮

在紙張的抄造過程中,與造紙機運行方向一致的方向為紙張的縱向,與紙機運行方向垂直的方向為紙張的橫向,在紙張的縱橫兩個方向上紙張纖維排列有顯著差別。這是因為在紙機運轉時的牽引力的作用下,纖維大多數按縱向排列。因此紙張在縱向和橫向上的性能是有差異的,這就是通常所說的紙張的方向性。

紙張纖維在吸濕潤脹後,纖維直徑方向膨潤的幅度比其長度方向要大,故紙張吸濕時,橫向伸長率比縱向大,一般大2~8倍。因此,對於單張紙印刷,通常選擇紙張縱向為紙張的長邊,橫向為紙張的短邊,這樣垂直於印刷方向(即滾筒軸向)的伸長率相對低一些,多色套印效果就要好一些。而且伸長較長的短邊造成的套印不準可以通過調整印版滾筒襯墊來補償,而滾筒軸向的套印不準則無法通過這種方法來補償。

對於單張紙印刷,除要求使用同一批次的紙張外,紙張的方向更需要保持一致,這樣裝訂成冊的書才不至於出現書頁長短不齊的情況。
