長期以來英國平面設計和印刷技術主要是受到荷蘭的影響,自己並沒有多少創新。特別是17世紀以來英國內戰連綿不斷,宗教鬥爭和宗教迫害日益嚴重,政府對於印刷業的蠻橫乾預,嚴重阻礙了英國的出版業及平面設計的發展

英國的平面設計印刷發展

長期以來英國平面設計和印刷技術主要是受到荷蘭的影響,自己並沒有多少創新。特別是17世紀以來英國內戰連綿不斷,宗教鬥爭和宗教迫害日益嚴重,政府對於印刷業的蠻橫乾預,嚴重阻礙了英國的出版業及平面設計的發展


真正開創英國自己的印刷設計和平面設計的人物是威廉·卡斯隆(1692-1766)。他有感於當時字體風格的落後,從1720年左右開始從事新字體的設計和鑄造,進而使英文字體具有典雅、簡潔、明快的特點。

他把從荷蘭傳過來的歐洲流行字體進行改造,設計出“卡斯隆體”,與巴洛克的對稱、強烈、莊重的風格相一致,字形對稱,穩定感強,線條的粗細對比強烈,視覺上典雅、舒朗、優美,至今仍為很多國家廣泛使用。
