象徵性的隱喻是指一種或一組形象使人們體驗到其內含的意義,進而間接地把握其所指稱的對象。它的特點是,所借用的形象是一個外在的象徵物而被指或被喻的對象只有在人們的想象中才能獲得。

象徵性的隱喻是指一種或一組形象使人們體驗到其內含的意義,進而間接地把握其所指稱的對象。它的特點是,所借用的形象是一個外在的象徵物而被指或被喻的對象只有在人們的想象中才能獲得。這種攝取、存儲和傳播信息的方式是以象形所獲得的形象為基礎,通過會意和借喻把握對象的視覺符號生成方式。


它和借喻的區別是借喻是由此及彼,而隱喻是由表及里。這種區別極大地影響了視覺符號及其平面設計。因為象徵性的隱喻不僅擴大了人們的想象世界,而且還開闢了一個看不見的世界

與借喻相比,隱喻或象徵更能廣泛地表現各種籠統的事物和那些帶有抽象性的屬性,諸如生命、死亡、戰爭、和平、友誼、幸福等等。視覺符號不能用概念表示生命是什麽,但能創造象徵物,讓受傳者從隱喻中意會到生命的含義。


象徵或隱喻不是直說,也不是明示。因此,它能夠含蓄地表示一些人們有所忌諱的事物。在原始文化中,男女兩性都有一些象徵物。男性的象徵有箭、木棍、柞等,女性的象徵物有圓筒、水坑、凹石等。這些象徵物既隱喻了兩性關系,又避開了有關禁忌。
