歌德認為,光在視覺上通過色彩來表現自己,這是符合視覺規律的。也就是說,對於視覺而言,色彩是一種基本的自然現象,歌德定義了三類色彩:生理色彩、物理色彩和化學色彩。生理色彩是視覺作用和反作用的結果,它是色彩瞬間的不可領會的一種形象,只存在於片刻的空間之中;物理色彩存在於無色的物體上,如鏡子、玻璃、三棱鏡、水晶等;化學色彩指能夠存在數個世紀的顏料,它附著在物體上。
