整本書由軟質紙封面、主書名頁和書心構成,有時還有其他非必備部件,如環襯、插頁等。



普通平裝:由不帶勒口的軟質封面、主書名頁和書心構成。一般不用環襯,有的主書名頁與正文一起印刷。



勒口平裝:由帶勒口的軟質紙封面、環襯、主書名頁、插頁(也有無插頁的)和書心構成。多用於書頁相對較多(有一定厚度)的中型開本的圖書。



平裝書的封面目前大多會作覆膜處理,這是將透明有光或無光(亞光)的塑料薄膜,在一定溫度壓力和黏合劑的作用下貼在封面紙上,使封面增加厚度、牢度和抗水性能。但為了環保,最好少用覆膜的辦法,可選用特種紙做封面,或者用“過油”的辦法代替平裝書一般採用的裝訂方法有騎馬訂、平訂、鎖線訂、無線膠背訂和鎖線膠背訂、塑料線燙訂。
