平面設計中的視覺符號主觀和客觀的統一具有兩方面的意義。首先,視覺符號是人造物,是人的主觀意志的產物。同時,它又是客觀實在的反映,它因為對象的存在而產生。因此,沒有對象就沒有視覺符號。

其次,通過人的精神活動所產生的視覺符號一且成為交流態勢,便具有了客觀性。因為視覺符號一旦進入社會,便被人們用於觀察,成為把握其他各種事物和現象的工具,也是人們遵守和運用各種規則的方式方法,成為一種制約人們思想和行為的工具。在這個意義上說,成形的視覺符號具有脫離人的主觀意志而以某種物質形態存在於社會生活之中的能力。

因此,平面設計中的符號既是主觀的,又是客觀的,既是思維的產物,同時又獨立於社會之中,兩者相互依存,互相統一。
