紙張生產中加入色料的目的主要是為了調色和染色植物纖維本身略呈黃色或灰色,即便漂白處理後,也不是純白色。為了提高紙張的白度,通常會在紙漿中加入藍紫色、紅藍色或品藍色等染料。

另外,生產有顏色的紙張需要加入相應顏色的色料除漂白染色提高紙張白度以外,還可以在紙漿中加人熒光增白劑,可較容易提高紙張白度,但熒光增白劑對人體有危害人體接觸過量的熒光增白劑會致癌。
