印刷紙含有纖維素、半纖維素及木素

纖維素的分子式為(CH12O3),n為葡萄糖基的數目,又稱為聚合度,其數量為幾百至幾千甚至上萬。纖維素屬於大分子物質,化學性質相對穩定,但其構成決定了其具有吸水潤脹、極和方向性的特點。紙張中含纖維素越多,則紙張的形穩性越好。

半纖維素是多種復合聚糖的總稱,也是一種多糖物質,是在植物中除纖維素外的碳水化合物,通常的聚合度較低一些,n值在200左右,其吸水性和潤脹能力均比纖維素大許多。

紙張中含半纖維素越多,則紙張的強度相對就高一些,但形穩性就差木素是一種網狀結構的天然高分子化合物,它的分子結構與纖維素和半纖維素不同,是一種非線性的高分子。它存在於植物中,起黏結纖維、增強強度的作用。

造紙工藝中為了得到纖維,就得盡量去除木素。由於木素不易吸水潤脹,故木素含量較高的成品紙就顯得硬而脆,同時木素在光照下易形成發色基團,故木素含量高的紙(如新聞紙)放久後易發黃變色。
