任何以數字形式描述的圖形、圖像與文字一旦形成後需要定位在頁面的某一位置上,並以頁面上的特徵點為基準。但是,由計算機控制生成的頁面只是一種虛擬的頁面,它只有邏輯上的意義在硬拷貝輸出到物理介質前還不是頁面實體。為了控制打印機按規定的格式將計算機定義的邏輯頁面輸出為實際的物理頁面,需要利用某種控制語言將邏輯頁面上的所有元素轉換為打印命令控制打印機輸出單元的動作,生成最終的頁面。這種控制打印機輸出的語言稱為頁面描述語言,從普通的辦公室和家用打印機到激光照排機均需要利用這樣的語言來控制輸出。目前用於印前最為可靠而且通用的頁面描述語言就是 PostScript語言。PS格式和PDF格式都是以 PostScript語言為基礎。
