視覺符號生成的實質就是傳播者對客觀對象的有效把握。因此,把握對象的方式和方法直接影響到視覺符號生成的質量。

用視覺符號把握對象的方式主要有以下五種:概括性的象形、聯想性的會意、類比性的借喻、象徵性的隱喻、標識性的指事。

需要指出的是,如果我們從縱向的角度看,這五種方式呈現出一種遞進上升的趨勢。視覺符號的抽象水平在一步一步地提高,視覺符號把握對象的廣度和深度也在一步一步地提高。但是,如果我們從橫向角度看,各種方式又彼此交錯、互相滲透,並無截然分明的絕對界限。總而言之,其他方式並不是對某種方式的否定或取消,一種方式往往可作為一種成分被納入其他機制之中。
