圖形語言可以通過視覺上的吸引力,突破語言地域等方面的限制,雖然圖形的註意力僅占人視覺的20%左右,但隨著消費者與商品之間可視距離的縮短,圖形吸引視覺的作用會陡然上升,合理有趣逼真誘人的圖形設計激發消費者進一步閱讀的興趣,直接引發消費者的購買望,所以,圖形設計主導著包裝的成功與失敗。插圖、攝像、圖示、符號與人物等元素可組合成眾多不同的風格設計,因此也創造豐富的視覺語言並提供視覺刺激。圖像可以是很簡潔的,像是提供概念的迅速認知,也可能是很復雜或潛意識的,使消費者必須多花時間思考以完全理解其中的含義。仔細考慮不同於視覺觀看的感官體驗,如味道、香味、口味等,都可以成為包裝設計的視覺表現。


傳達品牌特徵與特定產品屬性的圖像,則必須依據其直接性與合適性。食品包裝設計所表現的食欲、生活形式的含義、情緒的聯想及產品使用說明,皆是圖像闡釋包裝設計的形式。專註於客戶所勾勒出策略目標的廣泛創意探索則會縮小其適當且可以支持理念的圖像選擇範圍,描述性強的營銷則要可以為客戶期望創造視覺性的藍圖。
