因此,視覺符號的交流功能主要表現在五個方面表達方式的簡練性。如傳統信息傳播中的烽火、信號樹,現代交通標志都是以極其簡練的方式表達了密集的信息,使人一目瞭然表達內的豐富性。在視覺符號中,有一些人們長期使用、約定俗成的視覺符號形式,如十字架、國旗、國徽、紅十字、八卦符號等。它們在特定使用環境中,會產生無法表達的復雜意義。

體態語的功能。人的體態視覺符號既可以伴隨語言出現,用以補充、修飾語言,也可以單獨出現,用以表達不便於或無法用語言表達的各種信息。
