在幾何學上,線條是一個看不見的實體。它是點在移動過程中所留下的痕跡。因而它是運動所產生的最基本的造形元素—一點相對的結果,嚴格地說,它可以稱作第二元素。線是概念的、假定的。線在自然形態中並不存在是人們觀察和認識客觀事物的結果。

在幾何學上,線條是一個看不見的實體。它是點在移動過程中所留下的痕跡。因而它是運動所產生的最基本的造形元素—一點相對的結果,嚴格地說,它可以稱作第二元素。線是概念的、假定的。線在自然形態中並不存在是人們觀察和認識客觀事物的結果。因此,人們將自然形態轉化為藝術形態時,線是第一個拋棄自然原形的創造物。視覺符號中的繪畫首先是通過線認識客觀事物的,並常以線表現客觀事物,作為傳遞信息的手段。


線的出現改變了自然形象或物象的性質,使非藝術的自然形態轉化為藝術化的形態,並在其中摻入了人類的獨特情感。從原始時代開始,人們就懂得運用線設計視覺符號。從這個意義上的說,線是一個了不起的造形要素。


線是人對客觀事物形象的結構性體面的邊緣感受,即面與面之間的界限因此,線是人們定形的一種途徑工具線有長短、粗細、剛柔、強弱、輕重、曲折、徐疾、濃淡、乾濕、轉折、頓挫等變化,分別給人以力量、速度、移動、粗獷、纖秀、厚實、凝重、明快、精緻、輕松、流暢、靈活、剛強、柔軟、堅韌、彈性、連綿、平穩、犀利等美感、運動感和節奏感。
