形狀是用線條圍成的視覺的空間,是以簡單的面為基礎,而有性格取向的面。物象一般是由形去確定的,也有以性質確定的,如化學,而視覺和觸覺之物則是用形狀規範的。因此,形狀總有一定的限度,有面、體、邊界。

平面設計元素（面）的應用

形狀是用線條圍成的視覺的空間,是以簡單的面為基礎,而有性格取向的面。物象一般是由形去確定的,也有以性質確定的,如化學,而視覺和觸覺之物則是用形狀規範的。因此,形狀總有一定的限度,有面、體、邊界。對視覺符號生成而言,從形態說,形狀還分為自然形狀和人工形狀。自然形狀是指自然界的一切客觀物體形象,人工形狀是指社會生活中一切人為的造形。

從構成的角度看,形狀可以分為幾何形狀和有機形狀、抽象形狀和具象形狀。幾何形狀給人以簡潔、概括、抽象的感覺圖。方形顯得嚴肅、規矩公正、靜止;圓形顯得圓滿、永恆、運動、流暢;三角形顯得穩重、堅固、結實。自然形狀給人真實的感覺。

而形狀通過正負、連接、聯合、分離、減缺、疊加、透疊、覆疊、差疊等變化,又產生不同的視覺感受。事實上,早在原始時代的古埃及人已經提供並進行了這樣的實驗,一種簡單的幾何圖形既可以產生空間的美感,也能給人一種純屬視覺的深度錯覺。因此,歷史的發展表明形狀是一個充滿情感、幻想和變化的造形因素。
